About this chart

France produced 4.763 million metric tonnes of wine in 2023, ahead of Italy at 4.250 million and Spain at 2.850 million. Italy had led the comparison in 1993, with 6.267 million tonnes against France’s 5.331 million. Both the identity of the leader and the amount produced differ between these endpoints.

The FAO series uses metric tonnes, a measure of mass. Wine statistics elsewhere often use liters or hectoliters, which measure volume and are not interchangeable without a conversion. This page also measures production rather than domestic drinking or exports, so it answers a different question from a wine-consumption ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Which country produces the most wine?

France produced 4.763 million metric tonnes of wine in 2023, the largest amount in this FAO comparison.

Why are the values in tonnes rather than liters?

The source reports wine production by mass. The page preserves that unit instead of introducing an unsupported volume conversion.

Where does this data come from?

UN Food and Agriculture Organization, agricultural production via Our World in Data. Retrieved November 5, 2026. Annual production in metric tonnes, not export value or crop yield. Coffee is green (unroasted) beans; cocoa is cocoa beans; rice is harvested rice, not milled-rice equivalent. Wine is measured by mass, not liters. You can download the full table as a CSV from this page.

Can I turn this chart into a video?

Yes. Open it in the editor, change the title, theme, colors or format (9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube), and export an MP4. Free exports are 720p with a small watermark; Pro ($11.99/month) removes it and adds 1080p, 4K and 60 fps.
