Cote d’Ivoire also led in 1993, at 0.804 million tonnes, while Brazil then ranked next. The comparison shows both a persistent leader and a changing group of other major producers.

These are cocoa beans at the agricultural production stage, not chocolate, cocoa butter or retail confectionery sales. Processing can take place in a different country from cultivation. A country’s position among bean producers therefore does not establish its position among chocolate manufacturers or exporters of finished products.
