How to make a bar chart race, step by step

Bar chart races look complicated, but the work is mostly picking a good dataset and a good question. Here's the whole process.

1. Pick a question, not a topic

"Social media" is a topic. "Which app will pass Facebook first?" is a question. Questions make people guess, and guessing makes them watch to the end.

2. Find data with a lead change

Look for 8 to 15 items over 10 or more time points where the ranking changes at least once. Good sources: World Bank, Our World in Data, company earnings reports, Statista summaries, Wikipedia tables, and your own analytics.

3. Shape the table

Put dates in the first column and one item per column, or items in the first column with dates across the top. Use rounded numbers; viewers can't read decimals at speed.

4. Build it

  1. Paste the table into the MakeYourChart editor.
  2. Choose Bar race, 9:16 and a theme.
  3. Write the question as the title and add a caption at the lead change.
  4. Set race length to 20 to 40 seconds and keep the end card.

5. Post it

Upload the MP4, add a trending sound, and put the question in your caption. Credit your source in the caption too; it builds trust and heads off "source?" comments.

Frequently asked questions

What data format do I need?

Any table works. Put dates down the first column and one column per item, or put items down the first column and dates across the top row. A three-column list (date, name, value) works too. Paste straight from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a CSV.

What's a good length?

20 to 40 seconds for Reels and TikTok, 60 to 120 seconds for YouTube.

Is it free?

Yes. You can build, preview and export 720p videos with a small watermark for free, no account needed. Pro is $11.99 a month and swaps our watermark for your logo, adds 1080p and 4K, 60 fps and music. Pro + AI is $19.99 a month and adds AI cleanup for messy data.
