China produced 140.100 million metric tonnes of wheat in 2024, ahead of India at 113.292 million and Russia at 82.588 million. In 1993, China also led, but the United States ranked above India. The US figure is 53.650 million tonnes in the latest year, below its 1993 total of 65.222 million.
Large harvests do not automatically mean large exports. Domestic food demand, animal feed, inventories and trade all matter, while this series records only annual production. The FAO data lets readers compare crop output in a consistent physical unit without treating market prices as changes in the amount of wheat grown.
