About this chart
India produced 217.868 million metric tonnes of rice in 2024, compared with China’s 207.530 million. That reverses the order in 1993, when China produced 177.514 million tonnes and India 117.523 million. Bangladesh ranks next in the latest comparison at 60.570 million tonnes, followed by Indonesia and Vietnam. All are annual national harvest totals.
The FAO series measures rice production by harvest weight, rather than the amount exported or the value sold. These quantities should not be read as milled-rice equivalents. Differences in processing, cultivated area and crop yields can all separate a production ranking from a ranking of rice exporters.
