About this chart
Ukraine's line falls from a high early in the series. The UN estimates a peak of about 52.4 million in 1993, then a long decline to 49.6 million in 2000 and 44.3 million in 2021. The total then dropped sharply, to 41.1 million in 2022 and 37.7 million in 2023, the years of Russia's full-scale invasion, with large numbers of people displaced abroad.
The medium projection shows a brief rebound to about 38.4 million in 2030, then a steady slide to 32.0 million in 2050, 22.8 million in 2075 and 15.2 million in 2100. Ukraine's world rank falls from 13th in 1950 to 40th in 2023, and a projected 61st in 2050 and 88th in 2100. Data are from UN World Population Prospects 2024.
