About this chart
Ukraine's GDP has been through three deep drops since the World Bank series begins in 1987. It fell 35 percent in 2009, from $188 billion to $122 billion. In 2014 and 2015, as war began in the east and the hryvnia collapsed, it fell 30 percent and then 32 percent, bottoming at $91 billion. After Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 it fell 19 percent, from $200 billion to $162 billion. By 2025 GDP was a record $214 billion, 56th in the world, up from 59th in 2000.
Ukraine finishes the race with its three nearest economies behind Hungary ($247 billion) and Qatar ($216 billion) and ahead of Morocco ($182 billion). Ukraine trailed Qatar until 2020, led it in 2020 and 2021, and has trailed since 2022, by about $1 billion in 2025. It passed Morocco for good in 2018 after trailing it from 2015 to 2017. Figures are nominal current US dollars, so a weaker hryvnia lowers the line.
