About this chart

Taiwan's population roughly tripled from about 7.6 million in 1950 to 16.4 million in 1975 and 22.3 million in 2000. It then crept up to a peak of about 23.7 million in 2019 and has slipped every year since, to about 23.3 million in 2023. The turn is small so far, only a few hundred thousand people, but it marks the first sustained decline in the series.

The UN's medium projection accelerates that fall: about 22.6 million in 2030, 19.4 million in 2050, 14.0 million in 2075 and 10.0 million in 2100, less than half of today's total. Taiwan's world rank drops from 49th in 1950 to 59th in 2023, then a projected 76th in 2050 and 101st in 2100. Figures are from UN World Population Prospects 2024, with projections after 2023.
