About this chart
Sri Lanka's population grew from about 7.8 million in 1950 to 13.6 million in 1975, 19.3 million in 2000 and 23.0 million in 2023, according to UN estimates. Its world rank drifted down over the period, from 44th in 1950 to 61st in 2023, as faster-growing countries passed it, even though the island itself kept gaining people.
The medium projection has the island adding only about 1.8 million more people before it tops out at roughly 24.8 million in 2051. After that it expects a gradual decline, to about 23.8 million in 2075 and 21.3 million in 2100. The projected rank is 67th in 2050 and 74th in 2100. Figures are from UN World Population Prospects 2024, with projections beginning after 2023.
