About this chart

In 1960 the average South Korean woman would have had 5.99 children. By 1980 that was 2.82, by 1990 it was 1.57, and it kept falling to 1.23 in 2010, 0.84 in 2020 and 0.75 in 2024. A fall of more than five births per woman in 64 years is steeper than any of the other countries charted. Japan went from 2.0 to 1.15, the United States from 3.65 to 1.63 and China from 4.45 to 1.01.

The measure is the total fertility rate, the average number of children a woman would have in her lifetime at current age-specific birth rates, from the World Bank. A rate of about 2.1 is usually needed for a population to replace itself without migration, so 0.75 is well below that. South Korea's 1990 rate of 1.57 was already near Japan's 1.54, and the two have moved apart since: South Korea is now 0.40 below Japan.
