About this chart

The US total fertility rate was 3.65 births per woman in 1960 and 2.48 in 1970. It dipped to 1.84 in 1980, recovered to 2.08 in 1990 and held near 2.06 in 2000, then declined to 1.93 in 2010, 1.64 in 2020 and 1.63 in 2024. The US was ahead of the United Kingdom, France and Japan in 1960, 1990, 2000, 2020 and 2024, but not in 1970, 1980 or 2010, when France was higher.

The measure is the average number of children a woman would have in her lifetime at current age-specific birth rates, from the World Bank. A rate of about 2.1 is usually needed for a population to replace itself without migration, and the US has not reached that in any charted year since 1970, with 2.08 in 1990 the closest. France was at 2.03 in 2010 against the US at 1.93, but its rate fell to 1.61 by 2024, a steeper drop than the US.
