About this chart
This ranking lists the smallest land areas, not the largest. Monaco is the smallest at 2 square kilometers in 2022, followed by Gibraltar at 10, Naoero (Nauru) at 20, Tuvalu at 26 and Macao at 33. Several entries are territories rather than sovereign countries: Gibraltar, Macao, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Aruba and American Samoa all appear alongside independent states such as Monaco, Tuvalu and San Marino.
The figure is land area from the World Bank, which excludes inland water such as lakes and rivers. Most values are from 2022, though the Channel Islands (198 km²) are from 2021. Sint Maarten (34), St. Martin (53), Bermuda (54), San Marino (61), the British Virgin Islands (151), Liechtenstein (160) and Aruba and the Marshall Islands (180 each) complete the list.
