About this chart
Nearly half of adults in Timor-Leste, 48.8%, use tobacco in the 2024 data, the highest share in the ranking. Lebanon follows at 46.9% and Myanmar at 43.4%. After them comes a cluster of European countries: Serbia (39.7%), North Macedonia (39.6%), Bulgaria (38.7%) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (37.1%). Papua New Guinea sits at 39.3%. France is the only large Western European country on the list, at 33.6%.
The indicator is the prevalence of current tobacco use among adults, reported by the World Bank, and it covers countries with more than 1 million people. Current use includes cigarettes and other tobacco products, not only smoking, so the numbers are higher than cigarette-only figures. The 15 countries shown all have 2024 values, from 48.8% down to Cyprus at 32.5%. Latvia, Croatia, Jordan, Georgia and the West Bank and Gaza (35.5%) fill out the rest.
