About this chart

Louisiana's chart has a visible cliff. The estimate stood at about 4.58 million in 2005 and fell to about 4.30 million in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. The state then rebuilt its population and reached a peak of 4,681,346 in 2016. That sudden loss is a large part of why Louisiana's long-run growth looks so small.

Since that peak, Louisiana has shrunk slightly, to 4,618,189 in 2025. Over the long run it has grown only 9.5 percent since 1990, 3.3 percent since 2000 and 1.6 percent since 2010. The state ranked 21st among the 50 states in 1990, 22nd in 2000, and 25th in 2010 and 2025. Data are Census Bureau July 1 estimates.
