About this chart

North Dakota is a state of two eras. From 1990 to 2005 its population went from 637,364 to about 646,000, shrinking at times, including a dip to about 634,000 in 1999. Then the Bakken oil boom began to draw workers, and the estimate climbed from 674,752 in 2010 to 755,500 by 2015, finishing at a record 799,358 in 2025.

Growth is 24.5 percent since 2000 and 18.5 percent since 2010, the fastest since 2010 of any Midwestern state. The state ranked 47th among the 50 states in 1990 and 2000, dropped to 48th in 2010 and returned to 47th in 2025. The figures are Census Bureau resident estimates for July 1, and they show growth slowing after the oil-driven surge.
