About this chart

New York was the second most populous state in 1990, with 18,002,855 residents. It slipped to third by 2000 as Texas passed it, and to fourth in 2025 as Florida did the same. In raw numbers the state has still added about 2 million people, reaching 20,002,427 in 2025, but that growth lags well behind the Sun Belt.

The series peaked at 20,122,262 in 2020, then fell to about 19.71 million in 2022 before partly recovering. Gains are 5.3 percent since 2000 and 3.1 percent since 2010. The jump between 1999 and 2000 reflects the switch to census-based estimates, not a one-year surge. All figures are Census Bureau July 1 resident estimates.
