About this chart

Arizona is one of the clearest Sun Belt growth stories in the Census series. Its population went from 3,679,056 in 1990 to 7,623,818 in 2025, a gain of 107 percent. Even recent growth is strong: 47.7 percent since 2000 and 19.0 percent since 2010, far above the national pace of most states in this series.

That growth moved Arizona up the rankings. It was 24th among the 50 states in 1990, 20th in 2000, 16th in 2010 and 14th in 2025. The state added more than 437,000 people between 2020 and 2025 alone. The chart shows Census Bureau resident population estimates for July 1 of each year.
