About this chart

Russia's land area of 16.38 million square kilometers is far beyond any other country, nearly double second-place China at 9.39 million. The United States follows at 9.15 million, then Canada at 8.79 million, Brazil at 8.36 million and Australia at 7.69 million. After those six there is a steep drop: India, in seventh place, covers 2.97 million, less than half of Australia's total.

The World Bank figure is land area, which leaves out major inland water bodies such as lakes and rivers. That matters for the ranking: Canada and the United States both contain large lakes, so on total area including water the order among the top countries can look different from the one shown here. All values are from 2022, the most recent year in the data. Argentina (2.74 million), Kazakhstan (2.70 million) and Algeria (2.38 million) are next after India.
