About this chart

Afghanistan has multiplied its population more than five times since 1950, from about 7.8 million to 41.5 million in 2023. The path was not smooth. The series climbs to about 13.7 million in 1979, then falls to about 10.9 million by 1983, a period of war and mass displacement, before growth resumes and the country passes 20 million around 2000.

The UN medium projection shows no peak before the end of the century. It puts Afghanistan at about 76.9 million in 2050 and about 130.2 million in 2100, which would lift its world rank from 36th in 2023 to 25th in 2050 and 16th in 2100. In 1950 it ranked 45th. Figures come from UN World Population Prospects 2024: estimates through 2023, projections after.
