About this chart
The United Kingdom grew slowly for decades and then picked up. The UN estimates about 50.1 million people in 1950, 56.2 million in 1975 and 59.1 million in 2000, then a jump to about 68.7 million in 2023. Even so, the UK's world rank fell from 9th in 1950 to 21st in 2023 as larger countries grew faster.
The UN's medium projection has the total still rising for decades: about 71.3 million in 2030, 75.5 million in 2050 and a peak of roughly 76.1 million in 2072. A mild decline follows, to about 74.3 million in 2100. The projected rank is 26th in 2050 and 34th in 2100. Figures are from UN World Population Prospects 2024, with projections after 2023.
