About this chart

Saudi Arabia's GDP was $164 billion in 1980, when it ranked 14th in the world, and only $190 billion in 2000, by which time it had slipped to 23rd. Then the line took off: $528 billion in 2010 and a record $1.28 trillion in 2025, good for 19th. Oil prices drive the swings. Dollar GDP fell 17 percent in 1982, 16 percent in 1986 and 18 percent in 2009, from $520 billion to $429 billion.

Its three nearest economies in 2025 are Indonesia ($1.45 trillion), the Netherlands ($1.33 trillion) and Switzerland ($1.04 trillion). Saudi Arabia has trailed Indonesia since 2009 and passed Switzerland for good in 2017. The Netherlands is the closest contest: Saudi Arabia led from 2022, then fell back behind in 2025. Figures are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power.
