About this chart
Singapore's climb is one of the steepest in the data. Its GDP was $11.9 billion in 1980, when it ranked 59th in the world, then $96 billion in 2000 (42nd), $240 billion in 2010 and a record $604 billion in 2025 (27th). Setbacks have been mild for a small, trade-dependent economy: the largest were 14 percent in 1998, from $100 billion to $86 billion, and 7 percent each in 2001 and 2020.
Among its three nearest economies, Singapore in 2025 is behind Sweden ($669 billion) and Israel ($611 billion) and ahead of Austria ($580 billion). Sweden has been ahead throughout. Israel is the tight race, only about $7 billion apart, and the two have swapped places in 2010, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2024 and 2025. Singapore has led Austria since 2024. These are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power.
