About this chart

France was the world's 4th-largest economy in 1980, 5th in 2000 and 7th in 2025. GDP kept rising, reaching a record $3.37 trillion in 2025, but others grew faster. The sharpest fall in the data was 15 percent in 2015, from $2.86 trillion to $2.44 trillion, and a 12 percent fall came in 1981. France now trails the United Kingdom ($4.00 trillion) and India ($3.96 trillion).

France overtook the UK in 1967, fell behind in 1997 and led again for stretches around 2009 and 2013, and has trailed since 2014. India moved ahead of France in 2017, dropped back in 2018 and has led since 2019. France remains well ahead of Russia ($2.56 trillion), the fourth economy in the comparison. All values are nominal current US dollars, so exchange rates move them.
