About this chart
Laureates born in the United States have won 303 Nobel Prizes, more than the next three countries combined: the United Kingdom (96), Germany (86) and France (64). France was ahead in 1901, and Germany and France traded the lead through the 1920s. The United States tied Germany at 35 in 1949 and has led alone since 1950. Japan (31) and Sweden (30) round out the top six.
The chart counts prizes awarded to individuals by the laureate's birth country, using the present-day name of the place, so it measures where winners were born rather than where they worked or held citizenship. A person who won twice counts twice, and organizations such as the Red Cross are excluded. Three laureates had no birth country in the Nobel Prize API and were added by hand: Abdulrazak Gurnah (Tanzania), James A. Robinson (UK) and John M. Martinis (US). The October 2026 announcements are included.

The United States, with 303 Nobel Prizes to laureates born there through 2026. The United Kingdom has 96, Germany 86, France 64, Japan 31 and Sweden 30.

Where does this data come from?
Nobel Prize Outreach, Nobel Prize API v2.1 (api.nobelprize.org/2.1/laureates); cumulative count of individual prizes by laureate birth country (countryNow) at each year-end. Retrieved November 4, 2026. Counts prizes awarded to individuals (a person who won twice counts twice; organisations such as the Red Cross are excluded since they have no birth country). Country is the present-day name of the laureate birthplace. Three laureates lacked birth country in the API and were added by hand: Abdulrazak Gurnah (Tanzania), James A. Robinson (UK), John M. Martinis (US). Includes the October 2026 announcements. You can download the full table as a CSV from this page.

Yes. Open it in the editor, change the title, theme, colors or format (9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube), and export an MP4. Free exports are 720p with a small watermark; Pro ($11.99/month) removes it and adds 1080p, 4K and 60 fps.
