About this chart
Japan was the second-largest economy in the world in both 1980 and 2000, when its GDP was $5.04 trillion. It peaked in 2012 at $6.33 trillion, then fell 17 percent in 2013. In 2025 GDP stood at $4.44 trillion, about 30 percent below that peak, and Japan ranked 4th. A 15 percent fall in 2022 and a 12 percent fall in 2001 are the other large drops in the data.
In the race with its three nearest economies, Japan was ahead of the United Kingdom ($4.00 trillion) from 1966 and still is. China ($19.50 trillion) passed Japan in 2010 and is now more than four times its size. Germany ($5.05 trillion) moved ahead in 2023, pushing Japan to 4th. These are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power, so a weaker yen lowers Japan's line.
