About this chart

Canada's economy reached a record $2.32 trillion in 2025, up from $275 billion in 1980 and $745 billion in 2000. Its world rank has slipped over that time: 7th in 1980, 8th in 2000 and 10th in 2025. The biggest setbacks were a 14 percent fall in 2015 and an 11 percent fall in 2009, followed by a 5 percent dip in 2020. Each was recovered within a few years.

The three nearest economies are packed tightly. In 2025 Russia ($2.56 trillion) and Italy ($2.55 trillion) are ahead of Canada, while Brazil ($2.28 trillion) is just behind. Canada passed Brazil in 2020 and has held that lead. Russia and Canada have swapped places repeatedly since 2008. These figures are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power, so exchange rates move them.
