About this chart

Germany has ranked 3rd in the world in 1980, 2000 and 2025, and its GDP hit a record $5.05 trillion in 2025. The path under that stability was bumpy. Dollar GDP fell 16 percent in 1981, 11 percent in 1997 and 14 percent in 2015, the last from $3.97 trillion to $3.43 trillion.

In the race against the three economies nearest in size, Germany trails the United States ($30.77 trillion) and China ($19.50 trillion) by a wide margin. China moved ahead in 2007. The tighter contest was with Japan ($4.44 trillion), which passed Germany in 1968 and held the lead until Germany retook it in 2023. Figures are nominal current US dollars, so exchange-rate swings move the line.
