About this chart
Argentina's economy was worth about $683 billion in 2025, its highest figure since the series begins in 1960 and 24th in the world. In 2000 it ranked 16th, with GDP of $284 billion. The slide came with the 2002 crisis: GDP measured in dollars fell from $269 billion in 2001 to $98 billion in 2002, a drop of 64 percent, as the peso lost most of its value.
In the race against the three economies closest to it in size, Argentina finishes ahead of Sweden ($669 billion) but behind Ireland ($722 billion) and Belgium ($725 billion). It edged past Sweden in 2022 and has stayed there. These are nominal current US dollars from the World Bank, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power, so exchange-rate swings move the line, and few currencies have swung as hard as the peso.

Frequently asked questions
What is Argentina's GDP?
Argentina's GDP was about $683 billion in 2025, according to the World Bank, measured in current US dollars. That ranks 24th in the world and is the highest value in the data since 1960.
Why did Argentina's GDP fall so much in 2002?
Argentina's dollar GDP dropped 64 percent, from $269 billion in 2001 to $98 billion in 2002. The peso lost most of its value that year, and because this series converts local output into dollars, a weaker currency shrinks the figure sharply.
Which economies are closest to Argentina's in size?
In 2025 the closest were Belgium at $725 billion, Ireland at $722 billion and Sweden at $669 billion. Argentina sat between Ireland and Sweden in the ranking, ahead of Sweden by about $14 billion.
