About this chart

In 1980 the United States produced about $2.86 trillion, with Japan second at $1.15 trillion and Germany third at $0.95 trillion. By 2025 the US is at $30.77 trillion and China has risen to second place at $19.5 trillion, far above Germany ($5.05 trillion), Japan ($4.44 trillion) and the United Kingdom ($4.0 trillion). India ($3.96 trillion) is now just behind the United Kingdom.

The figures are World Bank GDP in current US dollars: the value of everything a country produces in a year, converted at market exchange rates and not adjusted for inflation. That makes early years look much smaller than recent ones, and it means exchange-rate swings can move a country's ranking even when its output barely changes. France ($3.37 trillion), Russia ($2.56 trillion), Italy ($2.55 trillion) and Canada ($2.32 trillion) complete the top ten.

Frequently asked questions

Which country has the highest GDP?

In 2025, United States ranks #1 with $30.77T, followed by China ($19.50T) and Germany ($5.05T). Source: World Bank, World Development Indicators (NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), GDP in current US$ trillions.

Which country has the largest GDP?

The United States has the largest GDP, at about $30.77 trillion in 2025. China is second at $19.5 trillion and Germany third at $5.05 trillion, in current US dollars.

Who had the largest economy in 1980?

The United States had the largest economy in 1980, at about $2.86 trillion. Japan was second at $1.15 trillion and Germany third at $0.95 trillion, so China was not among the top five that year.

Is this GDP adjusted for inflation?

No. The World Bank series is GDP in current US dollars, so each year is valued at that year's prices and exchange rates. It is useful for comparing size across countries in a given year, less so for measuring growth over decades.

Where does this data come from?

World Bank, World Development Indicators (NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), GDP in current US$ trillions. Retrieved November 4, 2026. You can download the full table as a CSV from this page.

Yes. Open it in the editor, change the title, theme, colors or format (9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube), and export an MP4. Free exports are 720p with a small watermark; Pro ($11.99/month) removes it and adds 1080p, 4K and 60 fps.
