About this chart
Ireland produces about $131.6 thousand of GDP per person in 2025, the highest of any country with more than 1 million people. Switzerland follows at $114.8 thousand, Singapore at $98.8 thousand and Norway at $94.6 thousand, with the United States fifth at $90.0 thousand. In 1990 the order was different: Switzerland led at $40.2 thousand, ahead of Sweden at $30.5 thousand and Finland at $28.4 thousand.
GDP per capita divides a country's total output by its population, using World Bank figures in current US dollars. They are not adjusted for inflation or for differences in living costs between countries. Ireland's figure is also inflated by the output of multinational companies booked there, so it does not mean the average resident earns that much. Qatar ($72.5 thousand) is the only Gulf state in the top ten.
