About this chart
In 1980 the two economies were the same size, both at about $0.19 trillion. China had been slightly ahead in 1960 ($0.06 trillion to India's $0.04 trillion) and 1970 ($0.09 trillion to $0.06 trillion), and the real split came after 1990, when China was at $0.36 trillion and India at $0.32 trillion. By 2000 China had reached $1.22 trillion to India's $0.47 trillion, and in 2010 the gap was $6.19 trillion to $1.68 trillion.
By 2025 China's GDP is $19.5 trillion, about five times India's $3.96 trillion. India's economy has grown in every period shown, including from $2.67 trillion in 2020 to $3.96 trillion in 2025. The data is World Bank GDP in current US dollars, so it is not adjusted for inflation and moves with exchange rates. It measures the size of each economy, not income per person, and India now has the larger population of the two.
