About this chart
The all-time high for U.S. births is 4.32 million in 2007, with only 1957 (4.30 million) close. Births rose from 2.56 million in 1940 to 4.30 million in 1957 during the baby boom, then slid to 3.14 million in 1973, with a similar 3.14 million in 1975. After the 2007 peak they fell again, to 3.61 million in 2025. That is under 1% below 2024's 3,628,934. The 2023 count of 3,596,017 was the lowest since 1979.
The chart shows registered live births in the United States from NCHS and the CDC. Before 1951 the totals are estimates adjusted for under-registration and rounded, and the 1950s are rounded too. The 2025 figure of 3,612,012 is the final count from an October 2026 NCHS report; the earlier provisional count was 3,606,400. Some single years stand out: 1946 jumped to 3.41 million from 2.86 million, and 2020 had 3,613,647 births against 3,747,540 in 2019.
