About this chart

Violent crime rates fell in many states after the early 1990s, but the top of the ranking has shifted often. Florida had the highest rate in 1990 at 1,244.3 per 100,000 and was down to 267.1 by 2024. New York fell from 1,180.9 to 380.2 and California from 1,045.2 to 486.0. Florida led through 1997, South Carolina from 2001 to 2008, Alaska in most years from 2015 to 2020 and again in 2024, and New Mexico from 2021 to 2023.

Violent crime here means murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, as estimated by the FBI per 100,000 residents. Two caveats: the FBI's move to NIBRS reporting makes 2021 and 2022 less comparable with earlier years, and rape was redefined in 2013 and 2016. The District of Columbia is left out; its rate was 1,141.5 in 2023, above any state. The chart shows 12 states and does not include 2025.

The data

Source: FBI Uniform Crime Reporting estimated state violent-crime rates (offenses per 100,000 residents). 1990-2017: FBI-published state tables as reproduced on DisasterCenter.com (published rate where it agrees with offense count / population, cross-checked against the FBI Crime Data Explorer API); 2018-2024: FBI Summary Reporting System estimated-crimes file as tabulated on Wikipedia. 12 states selected: every state that led in any year plus the 2024 top states.. Retrieved November 4, 2026. 50 states only; District of Columbia is excluded (its rate is higher than every state, e.g. 1,141.5 in 2023). Violent crime = murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. The FBI's 2021 switch from the old Summary Reporting System to NIBRS means 2021-2022 estimates are less comparable with earlier years (several states, e.g. New York and Florida, show breaks); rape was redefined in 2013 and 2016. 2025 data are not shown because FBI estimated state rates for 2025 were not confirmed. Sources are a hobbyist reproduction (1990-2017) and Wikipedia (2018-2024) of FBI tables, spot-checked against the FBI CDE API.

Where does this data come from?

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting estimated state violent-crime rates (offenses per 100,000 residents).
