About this chart

Louisiana's combined sales tax rate of 10.11% is the highest in the country, split between a 5.00% state rate and a 5.11% average local rate. Tennessee follows at 9.61% (7.00% state, 2.61% local) and Washington at 9.51% (6.50% and 3.01%). Alabama and Arkansas tie at 9.46%, though Alabama gets there with a 4.00% state rate and 5.46% in local taxes, while Arkansas has a 6.50% state rate. California has the highest state-level rate at 7.25%, but its combined rate is 8.99%.

Rates are from the Tax Foundation as of January 1, 2026. The combined rate is the statewide rate plus an average local rate weighted by population, so what a shopper pays varies by city and county. The chart shows the 14 highest states. Five states levy no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Alaska's localities add an average of 1.82%. DC is not included.
