About this chart

Three films share the record of 11 competitive Academy Awards: Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). The Return of the King won every category in which it was nominated, the largest clean sweep in Oscar history. West Side Story (1961) is the best of the rest with 10, and Gigi, The Last Emperor and The English Patient each won 9.

The count covers competitive Oscars only, so honorary and special awards are excluded. Cabaret (1972) won 8 but lost Best Picture to The Godfather, the most wins without taking the top prize. Sinners (2025) holds the record for most nominations at 16 and won 4, and One Battle After Another won 6 including Best Picture at the 98th ceremony in March 2026. Walt Disney holds the personal record with 22 Oscars.
