About this chart

The French Bulldog is the American Kennel Club's most popular breed for 2025, its fourth year in a row at #1 since it ended the Labrador Retriever's long run in 2022. The breed ranked ninth in 2014, fourth in 2017 and second in 2020. The Labrador has been second since 2022, and the Golden Retriever has held third in every year of 2014 to 2019 and 2021 to 2025, with fourth in 2020.

AKC publishes ranks, not registration counts, so each bar shows a score: 21 minus the breed's AKC rank that year. A #1 breed scores 20, a #20 breed scores 1, and anything ranked 21st or lower scores 0. The score is a transformation made for this chart, not an AKC number. The Dachshund climbed from 13th in 2015 to 5th in 2025, pushing the Poodle out of the top five, while the Bulldog slid from 4th in 2014 to 10th. The 2025 list ranks 202 breeds.
