About this chart

Michigan lost people in the late 2000s, which is unusual for a large state. The estimate peaked near 10.06 million in 2004, then fell each year to 9,877,597 in 2010, as the Great Recession and cutbacks in auto manufacturing hit the state. It recovered slowly and reached a new high of 10,127,884 in 2025.

The long-run gain is small: 8.8 percent since 1990, 1.8 percent since 2000 and 2.5 percent since 2010. Michigan was 8th among the 50 states in 1990, 2000 and 2010, and 10th in 2025, after Georgia and North Carolina passed it. Figures are Census Bureau resident estimates for July 1 of each year.
