About this chart
Washington crossed 8 million residents in 2025, reaching 8,001,020 from 4,900,780 in 1990. That gain of 3.1 million people, or 63 percent, moved the state up four places, from 17th among the 50 states in 1990 to 15th in 2000 and 13th in 2010 and 2025. The estimate passed 7 million in 2014.
Growth was strongest through the 2010s, when it added nearly a million people from 2010 to 2020, and has cooled since. Washington is up 35.4 percent since 2000 and 18.7 percent since 2010, but only 3.5 percent since 2020, or about 274,000 people. The figures are Census Bureau resident estimates for July 1 of each year.
