About this chart

Russia's GDP stood at $260 billion in 2000, when it ranked 20th in the world. By 2025 it was a record $2.56 trillion and 8th. The climb was not smooth: the World Bank series begins in 1988, and dollar GDP fell 33 percent in 1998 and a further 28 percent in 1999, both times as the ruble collapsed. Another fall of 34 percent came in 2015, from $2.06 trillion to $1.36 trillion.

Russia finishes the race with its three nearest economies behind India ($3.96 trillion) and France ($3.37 trillion) and ahead of Italy ($2.55 trillion). India passed Russia in 1996, Russia regained the lead in 2006 and again in 2011, and India has been ahead since 2015. Russia and Italy have swapped places several times since 2012. The figures are nominal current US dollars, so exchange-rate swings move the line.
