About this chart

In 1998 Indonesia's GDP fell 56 percent in a single year, from $216 billion to $95 billion, the sharpest drop in the data. It was a year of crisis across East Asia, and the rupiah's collapse shrank the dollar figure. Twenty-seven years later GDP reached a record $1.45 trillion. The world rank tells the same story: 23rd in 1980, 27th in 2000, then up to 17th in 2025.

Indonesia's three nearest economies are Australia ($1.80 trillion), Türkiye ($1.60 trillion) and the Netherlands ($1.33 trillion). Indonesia has stayed behind Australia throughout, and it moved ahead of the Netherlands for good in 2015. Türkiye is the closest rival: Indonesia led it from 2016, then fell behind in 2025. Figures are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power.
