About this chart

New Jersey has grown in every year of the series, from 7,757,158 in 1990 to 9,548,215 in 2025, a gain of about 1.79 million people or 23.1 percent. The jump from 8.89 million in 2019 to 9.27 million in 2020 mostly reflects a change in the base: the estimates were reset to the 2020 census count.

Its place in the rankings changed in the 2000s. New Jersey was 9th among the 50 states in 1990 and 2000, then 11th in 2010 and 2025, after Georgia and North Carolina passed it. Growth is 13.3 percent since 2000 and 8.5 percent since 2010, with about 278,000 people added between 2020 and 2025. Data are Census Bureau resident estimates for July 1.
