About this chart

The Netherlands ranked 11th in the world in 1980, 14th in 2000 and 18th in 2025. That is a slide in the rankings during a period of strong growth: GDP rose from $195 billion in 1980 to $418 billion in 2000, $853 billion in 2010 and a record $1.33 trillion in 2025. Falls of 16 percent in 1981 and 14 percent in 2015 (from $902 billion to $776 billion) were the biggest interruptions.

Its three nearest economies in 2025 are Türkiye ($1.60 trillion), Indonesia ($1.45 trillion) and Saudi Arabia ($1.28 trillion). The Dutch economy is ahead of Saudi Arabia after regaining the lead in 2025, having fallen behind in 2022. Türkiye overtook the Netherlands in 2012 and again in 2023, and Indonesia has been ahead since 2015. Figures are nominal current US dollars, so exchange-rate swings move the line.
