About this chart

India's rise is one of the biggest rank changes in the data. It was 13th in the world in 1980 and still 13th in 2000, then climbed to 6th by 2025 as GDP reached a record $3.96 trillion. Setbacks were rare and mostly small: a 23 percent fall in 1966, a 16 percent fall in 1991 and a 6 percent fall in 2020, when GDP dropped from $2.84 trillion to $2.68 trillion.

India's three nearest economies are Japan ($4.44 trillion), the United Kingdom ($4.00 trillion) and France ($3.37 trillion). India has stayed behind Japan throughout the data. It passed the UK in 2022, then slipped behind again in 2025 by roughly $47 billion. Against France it moved ahead for good in 2019. Values are nominal current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or purchasing power, so exchange rates matter.
