About this chart

Brazil's best year in dollar terms was 2011, when GDP reached $2.62 trillion. By 2025 it was $2.28 trillion, still below that peak. The country ranked 8th in the world in 1980, 10th in 2000 and 11th in 2025. The steepest falls were 31 percent in 1999 and 27 percent in 2015, both years when the real weakened sharply against the dollar. In 2010 GDP had stood at $2.21 trillion.

Among the three economies nearest to it, Brazil is ahead of Spain ($1.91 trillion) in 2025 but behind Canada ($2.32 trillion) and Italy ($2.55 trillion). It passed Canada in 2008 and fell behind in 2020. It overtook Italy in 2010, fell behind in 2015, and has trailed since 2018. These are nominal current US dollars, so exchange rates shape the line.
