About this chart
Hank Aaron drove in 2,297 runs, the most in MLB history, and took the career lead in 1975 by passing Babe Ruth's 2,214. Albert Pujols retired in 2022 with 2,218, second all-time and just four more than Ruth. Alex Rodriguez is fourth with 2,086, and Cap Anson's 2,075 stood as the career record until Ruth passed it in 1933.
Lou Gehrig drove in 1,995 runs in only 17 seasons, one fewer than Barry Bonds (1,996) needed 22 seasons to reach. The top ten also includes Stan Musial (1,951), Ty Cobb (1,944) and Jimmie Foxx (1,922). RBI was not an official statistic before 1920, so Anson's total and Ruth's early seasons are retroactive tallies from Baseball-Reference.

Frequently asked questions
Who has the most RBIs in MLB history?
Hank Aaron has the most RBIs in MLB history, with 2,297. Albert Pujols is second with 2,218 and Babe Ruth third with 2,214, using Baseball-Reference totals.
When did Hank Aaron pass Babe Ruth for the career RBI lead?
Hank Aaron passed Babe Ruth's 2,214 in 1975, when he moved to 2,262 at the end of that season. Ruth had taken the lead himself in 1933.
Is the RBI total for early players official?
Not entirely. RBI was not an official statistic before 1920, so totals for players such as Cap Anson (2,075) and Babe Ruth's early seasons are retroactive counts from Baseball-Reference.
Where does this data come from?
Baseball-Reference.com, individual player Standard Batting tables (RBI), summed cumulatively by season; totals cross-checked with BR career RBI leaders page and Wikipedia's career RBI leaders list. Retrieved November 4, 2026. Baseball-Reference totals (MLB official totals differ slightly for a few 19th/early-20th-century players). Players keep their final total after retirement; blank = before debut. 2026 regular season included. RBI was not an official statistic before 1920; earlier totals are retroactive (Anson, Ruth's early seasons). You can download the full table as a CSV from this page.
Can I turn this chart into a video?
Yes. Open it in the editor, change the title, theme, colors or format (9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube), and export an MP4. Free exports are 720p with a small watermark; Pro ($11.99/month) removes it and adds 1080p, 4K and 60 fps.
