About this chart

Italy was the world's 6th-largest economy in 1980, 7th in 2000 and 9th in 2025. GDP reached a record $2.55 trillion in 2025, up from $2.14 trillion in 2010, but other economies grew faster. Its worst years in the data were 1993, when GDP fell 19 percent from $1.32 trillion to $1.07 trillion, and 2015, with a 15 percent fall from $2.17 trillion to $1.85 trillion.

Italy finishes the race within about $10 billion of Russia ($2.56 trillion) and well behind France ($3.37 trillion). Canada ($2.32 trillion) is behind Italy after Italy passed it in 2023. The Russia contest has flipped repeatedly: Italy led in 2014, trailed from 2022, led again in 2023 and fell behind in 2025.
