About this chart
Iowa has never been a fast-growing state, but it has rarely stood still. The population climbed from 2,779,769 in 1990 to 3,238,387 in 2025, a gain of about 459,000 people or 16.5 percent, and the 2025 figure is the highest in the series. Iowa held 30th place among the 50 states in 1990, 2000 and 2010, then dropped to 32nd by 2025 as faster-growing states such as Utah and Nevada passed it. It added about 47,000 residents between 2020 and 2025. The data are Census Bureau resident estimates for July 1 of each year.
