About this chart
Namibia ranks as the most unequal country in this dataset, with a Gini index of 59.1, though the reading dates from 2015. Botswana is next at 54.9 (2015), then Colombia at 54.8 (2022), Eswatini at 54.6 (2016) and South Africa at 54.1 (2022). Southern Africa and Latin America account for nearly the whole list: Brazil (51.9), Panama (50.9), Guatemala (48.3) and Honduras (48.2) are the other regional names on it.
The Gini index runs from 0, where everyone has the same income, to 100, where one person has all of it. The World Bank figures are estimates based on household surveys, and surveys are not run every year, so each country appears at its most recent value from the last ten years. The years therefore range from 2014 to 2022. This page lists the highest values only, meaning the most unequal countries, not the most equal.

Frequently asked questions
Which country has the highest income inequality?
Namibia has the highest income inequality in this dataset, with a Gini index of 59.1 in 2015. Botswana is second at 54.9 and Colombia third at 54.8, which is the most recent figure for each.
What does the Gini index measure?
The Gini index measures how unevenly income is distributed across a population on a scale from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means perfect equality and 100 means maximum inequality. Higher numbers, like Namibia's 59.1, mean a more unequal distribution.
Why are some of the data years so old?
Inequality estimates rely on household surveys that many countries run only every few years. The chart shows each country's latest value from the last ten years, which is why Namibia and Botswana are 2015 readings while Colombia and Brazil are from 2022.
