About this chart
The United States holds 8,133 tonnes of gold, the most of any country, and gold makes up 83.8% of its reserves. Germany is second with 3,349 tonnes, then Italy (2,452), France (2,437), China (2,410) and Russia (2,264). This is a single snapshot as of Q3 2026, not a time series, using official holdings from World Gold Council and IMF statistics.
China ranks fifth, yet its gold is only 9.5% of its foreign reserves. Switzerland holds 1,040 tonnes, India 881, Japan 846, Poland 673, the Netherlands 612 and Turkey 532. The IMF itself holds 2,814 tonnes, which would rank third, and the ECB holds 507, but neither is a country, so both are excluded. Holdings are officially reported rather than audited, and gold may be stored abroad.
