About this chart
New York produced $123.3 thousand of GDP for every resident in 2025, the highest of any state. It was fourth in 1997 at $39.5 thousand, behind Delaware ($45.3K), Alaska ($42.5K) and Connecticut ($42.4K). Alaska and Connecticut have since fallen back, and Washington and California have joined Massachusetts in the top five.
Output per person is not the same as income. The measure divides each state's GDP (from the Bureau of Economic Analysis) by Census resident population, so states with large finance and technology sectors, such as New York and Washington, rank high. North Dakota shows the effect of oil: $24.6K in 1997, a peak of $82.7K in 2014, $69.7K in 2016 and $103.0K in 2025. All values are current dollars, not adjusted for inflation.
